SARATOGA SPRINGS In its first venture with staging a dance show, Studio Arts Entertainment has scored a hit with “Tango Fusion,” created by Diane Lachtrupp and directed by Peter Kobor.
A regional premiere of the production that drew high praise in New York City, “Tango Fusion” explores the history of the tango in a most pleasurable way.
With 20 numbers, 10 talented dancers entertain by bringing out the sensitivity and aggressiveness of the form. They admirably convey its expression, energy, interaction and athletics.
Variety is a keynote as the performers dance to the enjoyable music produced by the three-piece jazz band led by Elizabeth Woodbury, pianist and percussionist. Mike Flanagan plays sax, clarinet and flute and Brian Mooney plays cello.
A few of the numbers are danced to equally enjoyable recorded music. Lighting and staging focus attention on the dancers, as they should.
The dancers, each of whom brings a display of individuality to the program, include Lachtrupp, Jodi Corideo, David Wolf, Keira Lemonis, Laurie Zabele, Julie Gale, Claire Vivo, Dario Da Silva, Johnny Martinez and Raul Martinez.
The fast-moving program is ablaze with the dancers’ artistry, enthusiasm, originality and touches of humor. The audience even gets an opportunity to design its own tango number near the close of the program.
One caution, however, is to arrive early and, since it is general admission, position yourself in the front rows. The Arts Center is not the best place to enjoy a dance show. The seating is level and the stage is not raised. Somewhere like the Charles R. Wood Theater with its steeply tiered seating would be better suited.
